Wisbech Rugby Club youth sides impress against St Ives and March Bears
Wisbech U8s travelled to St Ives Rugby Club looking forward to a series of games.
The team were kept busy throughout the morning, playing games against both the two St Ives teams and a March Bears team.
Try scoring came through some quick and elusive play from the Wisbech players. This was complemented by great passing and offloads after strong runs which got behind opposition defences.
Their own defence got better as the games progressed and in the final game it was so solid that it resulted in multiple turnovers.
Coach Alec South praised the whole team, who are developing well as a squad.
The Wisbech U9s also took 14 players to St Ives to play matches against the hosts and March Bears RFC. Players were split into a Tigers team and a Wildcats team.
The Tigers started the first game against St Ives in a fast and energetic manner and they didn’t let the cold conditions get to them. There was some very good attacking rugby with some powerful straight running, backed up with great off loads which produced some tries.
The St Ives attacking play was met with strong, fair tackling.
The Wildcats then took to the field and continued the Wisbech dominance with direct running and some brilliant tackling.
In the second game Wisbech played a second St Ives side and continued their high standard of play.
The Tigers again showed off some wonderful attacking and determined defence.
The last game against St Ives saw the Wildcats back in action. Wisbech kept up the pace and standards when they had the ball and when they were defending.
The last game for the Tigers was against March Bears, and the Tigers saved their best performance until last. When attacking the Tigers put the Bears defence under real pressure with skillful play and straight running. In defence they were well organised and applied good technique.
Coach Nat Humphreys thanked the hosts and March Bears for an enjoyable morning of rugby and praised the Wisbech players for their great team spirit and individual efforts on a heavy pitch.
The U10s played a series of games against the St Ives A&B teams and showed great energy, effort and team spirit throughout.
The young players combined well to produce passages of good continuity using short passes and off loads.
they all ran confidently with the ball in hand and made good decisions in the rucks and mauls. In defence, they applied constant pressure which resulted in several turnovers and scoring opportunities.
St Ives provided determined and sporting opposition, playing well coached rugby.
Coach Dave Dobson praised the team spirit and determination of the Wisbech players, particularly in the rucks and mauls.
The U11s squad competed wholeheartedly in their set of matches against the St Ives squad.
Wisbech team showed high levels of energy both with ball in hand and when defending. Tackling technique was tested by some strong St Ives runners, but many were completed.
Both try lines were crossed on many occasions despite the cold wind making handling difficult. Coach Phil Cooper said players from both clubs deserved praise for their excellent sporting attitudes.
