Wisbech Wheelers return to cycling action with William Horspool in thick of the action

Wisbech Wheelers' racing season got up and running with a string of events last week.

Young 14-year-old William Horspool was keenest off the mark with three races in four days.

He started his campaign in the Darley Moor under-16s road race on Sunday April 3, competing against riders nearly two years his senior - and his eighth-place didn't do him justice.

He led the race several times, but missed the crucial breakaway and was then boxed in at the finish.

Not satisfied with this, William raced in the Spalding five-mile TT in windy conditions and finished in 12.49.

The youngster was back in action on Wednesday evening at Tottenhill in the King's Lynn and Wisbech Club ‘10’. By this time the wind had picked up to gale force levels, with spells of rain meaning only four riders turned up to compete - three of them from Wisbech Wheelers.

William was quickest overall on the night with a time of 25.20. He was followed by 40+ vet Andrew Jenkins in 25.44 and a 60+ lady vet in her first race for over two years. She braved the wind and rain on her road bike to finish in 38.15.

Andrew Jenkins raced the previous Saturday in the King's Lynn open 25 mile TT, rounding the course in 1.06.

He was followed in by two fellow Wisbech riders - 70+ supervet Roger Sewell in 1.07.34 and 40+ vet Matthew Clarkson in 1.08.46.
