Wisbech drivers Callum and Russell Gill and Lennie Murkin star in 1500cc Banger Icebreaker at King's Lynn stock car racing

Team TKC – which included Wisbech drivers Callum and Russell Gill and Lennie Murkin – justified their favourites tag in the 1500cc Banger Icebreaker with a dominant display which saw them comfortably take the title.

It looked like they were going to face some stiff competition during the early rounds of heats when SBS got all their drivers home in the top four in their first heat and Crunchers Crew also scored well.

But when TKC came to contest their first heat they rose to the occasion, with Gill and Murkin making it a one-two.

TKC kept pace in their second heat, with Gill once again taking victory and father Russell also getting points on the board in fifth place.

Both SBS and Crunchers Crew struggled to make inroads in heat three, whilst Team TKC filled the top three spots with guest Harvey Webb taking the win ahead of Gill and Murkin.

This gave the team a massive margin entering the double points final as they had 135 points, with their nearest rivals Crunchers Crew 50 points behind.

Although the team had its roughest race, with only Murkin managing to score any points in fifth place, they still won the title by an impressive 45 point margin – with multi 2L stock car champion Deane Maye’s Team THP7 A finishing in second place.

Gill said: “It was great to be back in a banger. Can’t do much better than two firsts and a second and becoming Icebreaker champions – well done to all the team.”

Other drivers in action on Sunday included James Licquorice, racing for the THP 7 B. He had a good day which included winning an entertainer award in the meeting final.

The Fishermen, which included Stevie Hawes, Chucky Pegg and Jake McClagish, were all heavily involved in the action throughout the afternoon – with Chucky picking up an entertainer award too.

The 2023 season proper starts at King’s Lynn on March 4, featuring the F2 stock cars in a World Championship Qualifying round.
