Long Sutton beat Tydd in the final of the Spalding Inter-Services Cup
A fine all-round performance helped Long Sutton lift the Spalding Inter-Services Cup after victory over rivals Tydd on Saturday night.
The Magpies ran out 5-0 winners in the final at Holbeach United's Carter's Park ground to lift the trophy for the first time in 15 years.
Jamie Taylor and Jack Baker gave Sutton a two-goal half-time lead with strikes after the break from Jamal Nyang (two) and Adam Crane sealing their success.
It was a victory based on being clinical in front of goal while defending superbly to keep Tydd at bay during their strong spells in front of a large crowd.
Both sides had gone into the final looking for some silverware after an indifferent campaign in the Peterborough League.
Sutton had finished at the foot of the Division One table while Tydd had been forced to withdraw their first team from the top flight early in the season and saw out the campaign with their reserves running in Division Two.
James Ward fired an early effort for the Magpies while Liam Groves had a couple of half chances for Tydd after the ball broke to him in the box following set pieces.
Long Sutton goalkeeper Carl Taylor made a fine save from a Callum Matthews header as he went on to keep his first clean sheet of a busy campaign.
Nyang was denied at the other end as Tydd custodian Adam Coates came out to block smartly after the lively frontman had intercepted an under-hit back pass.
Kai Scott-Henson headed just wide for Tydd after racing onto a long clearance from Coates before Sutton struck the opening goal in the 25th minute.
Harry Munson won a crunching tackle before releasing Nyang who was bundled over in the penalty area by Groves and Jamie Taylor converted the resultant spot kick.
It gave Sutton the momentum to finish the half strongly and they doubled their advantage five minutes before the break.
Nyang was again the architect of the goal as he picked out Baker at the back post with a fine cross which was driven home by an equally impressive finish.
The Magpies could have extended their lead further in injury-time as Jordan Nyang saw a header well saved by Coates.
Tydd regrouped at the break and came out strongly for the second half and had their best spell of the game.
If they had been able to cut the deficit during a decent spell of pressure then the match could have swung their way but Sutton stood strong when it mattered.
Matthews had a close range header blocked by Max Seaman with Sam Bedwell-Byatt blasting the follow up over the crossbar.
Dan Cassidy and Groves then both had efforts cleared off the line by Munson and Baker with Matthew Cousins firing another shot just wide.
Jamal Nyang led a Sutton break from the Tydd pressure to find substitute Tyler Hagen but Jack Greenacre was unable to turn home the cross.
Tydd then had another great chance when Matthews teed up Scott-Henson who shot over when well placed before Coates kept his side in the game to thwart Greenacre after he had scampered through the defence.
Cassidy saw another Tydd chance saved by Carl Taylor with Robert Ward producing a superb block to keep out the follow-up.
The resultant corner saw Cassidy head wide before a marauding run from Tydd full-back Robert Thurlow ended with him crashing a fierce strike into the side-netting.
Sutton then started to come back into the contest as they weathered the storm with Tydd starting to run out of ideas on how to make the breakthrough.
Greenacre shot over after a strong run before Sutton finished with a flourish as they netted three times in the final 19 minutes with Tydd having to throw caution to the wind by piling extra players forward.
Substitute Crane found Greenacre whose shot hit the post with Jamal Nyang reacting first to drill home the rebound and put the contest beyond Tydd.
Nyang was then denied by Coates after latching onto a long ball but he made no mistake in the 76th minute with a close range finish following a corner.
The win was then sealed with a fifth goal with seven minutes remaining as Crane rifled home after Greenacre and Ryan Cousins had combined well to ensure the night ended in celebrations for Long Sutton.
