March Town look to bounce back from Coventry Sphinx defeat while Wisbech Town and Parson Drove face big fixtures
Fenland’s sides will be looking to get back to winning ways this week after a bleak few days.
It was a blank Saturday for our senior football sides, with March Town and Parson Drove defeated and Wisbech Town’s game postponed.
In the United Counties League Premier Division South, the Hares were beaten 2-0 at home to leaders Coventry Sphinx.
A crowd of 230 at the GER saw goals in the 48th and 62nd minutes by Matthew Shipman do the damage.
Last Tuesday evening, they had won 5-2 at bottom side Long Bucky. Two goals came from captain Danny Emmington, while Josh Burrows, Jack Friend and Craig Gillies grabbed one each before Adam Brumby was red carded.
And they will have been looking to get back to that kind of form when they travelled to FA Vase finalists Newport Pagnell Town, but it will have been no easy task against a side sitting fourth with 18 points more than the Hares.
And now, this Saturday, March face another trip to 14-placed GNG Oadby Town in what should prove a good opportunity to grab another three points. Godmanchester Rovers, who languish in 15th, are up next after that, with the Hares playing host in that fixture next Monday evening.
Meanwhile, after a good run had boosted their Thurlow Nunn League First Division North survival chances, four consecutive defeats have put Parson Drove right back in trouble.
On Saturday, Drove – who are only clear of the drop zone on goal difference – went down 3-1 at Norwich CBS.
They now have four games to secure their safety, starting at high flying Framlingham Town on Saturday before a visit to another promotion chaser in Harwich & Parkeston on Easter Monday.
Mid-table Diss Town are the visitors on Saturday, April 15, before what could be a decisive final day encounter at home to fellow strugglers Leiston Reserves the following weekend.
Wisbech Town’s United Counties League Premier Division North game at Leicester Nirvana was victim of a waterlogged pitch on Saturday.
However, the Fenmen now have two games in quick succession as they look to continue their fine form since the turn of the year.
They are next in action at bottom side Selston on Saturday, before entertaining Deeping Rangers on Bank Holiday Monday and Belper United the following Saturday.
Leon Mettam’s side will go into those games full of confidence after back-to-back home victories against Heanor Town and Loughborough Students, with the latter being particularly impressive.
