Wisbech St Mary B through to cup final after beating title rivals AEK United of Guyhirn
The top two in Cambs County League 4C clashed in the semi-final of the Reg Haigh and Arthur Peck Cup, with Wisbech St Mary B beating AEK United of Guyhirn 3-2 on penalties after the two fought out a 2-2 draw.
Adam Key scored the first for Saints with sub Justin Uddin netting late on to take the game to spot kicks, where home keeper David Cooper was the hero.
They will face 4A title challengers Litlington Athletic Reserves in the final at Newmarket on Friday, April 11.
Wisbech St Mary’s first team stretched the gap between themselves and bottom team Milton to five points when they drew 1-1 at home to Hardwick in the Cambs County Premier on Saturday.
The Cambridge side opened the scoring after just four minutes, but former Wisbech Town player Jake Gadsden equalised for Saints seven minutes before the break.
Both sides hit the woodwork and had chances to win the game in the second half, but the draw was a fair result in the end.
In Senior A, third place March Town United Reserves are still firmly in the promotion race after a 1-0 win at sixth-place Brampton & Buckden.
The Hares had the best of a tight game against a low block and saw Sean White hit the bar in the second half. The home side was reduced to ten men late on and the visitors finally scored three minutes into added-on time when Liam Monaghan unselfishly squared for 16-year-old Olly Hills to smash home from close range.
Manager Kieran Daplyn said: “We had five under-18s playing today and they were outstanding. Brampton were out on their feet at the end and it was a totally deserved three points and clean sheet.”
Seventh-place Wimblington could make a late charge for promotion themselves if they win their games in hand and gave their chances a boost when they beat Eaton Socon Reserves 3-1 at home, the two decisive goals coming in the final ten minutes.
Jay Rout scored all three for the recent William Cockell Memorial Cup champions to make it six goals from six games for him this season.
Outwell Swifts stay top of 1B with five games left to play after a 3-1 victory at struggling Benwick Athletic (Christchurch). Jack Brand scored all three for Swifts to make it six goals in six games for him this season.
A strong Chatteris Town Reserves won their mid-table clash over March Town United A 4-0, Sam Bond, Charlie Munns, Joshua Peachey and Alfie Richardson scoring.
Wisbech St Mary Reserves won 5-1 at Wicken Amateurs in 2B, Pawel Kalvzny netting four to take him to 23 for the season and Willis Wright also on target. In the same division, struggling Manea United had an impressive 3-1 home win over Houghton & Wyton, Matthew Kent netting twice to take him to 16 goals for the campaign and Freddie Bishop also on target.
Wisbech St Mary Development A are now just a point off leaders Beach with two games in hand after a 2-0 win at struggling Kennett,
In 4C, Chatteris Town A beat March Academy 5-2, Stanley Leach and Callum Wilkinson both notching doubles for The Lilies, with Rokas Borusas also on target. Wimblington Reserves lost a nine-goal thriller 5-4 at Mepal and Sutton Reserves, Robbie Ryan scoring twice and Lee Redhead and Jamie Whitehouse also on target for Wimblington.
In the bottom three, Outwell Swifts Reserves and Wisbech Town Acorns drew 0-0 and Manea United Reserves were thrashed 6-0 at Huntingdon United Reserves.
With Wisbech Town without a game this week, captain Max Mattless and striker Rob Conyard turned out for Leverington Sports as they beat Sawtry 2-1 in the Peterborough League Premier Division, Mattless and Swaley Stokes on target.
In Division One, Wisbech Town Reserves lost 3-1 at Warboys Town Reserves, Harry Ashby scoring for The Fenmen. Sutton Bridge United lost 3-1 at Stamford Lions in Division Two, Jack Thomas netting for Bridge.
Division Two outfit Tydd were beaten 1-0 at home to Division One side Whaplode Drove Reserves in the semi-final of the League Cup. Long Sutton Athletic Reserves and Leverington Sports A drew 0-0 in a Division Three derby.
Marshland Saints are up to fourth in Anglian Combination Three North after beating Ingoldisthorpe 5-1 at home. Their reserves lost 2-0 at Watlington Reserves in the North West Norfolk League Division One Cup.
