Fenland football tournament attracts thousands of spectators and players for two-day event

Sunday's heavy rain failed to dampen the spirits of players, spectators and organisers at East Anglia’s largest five-a-side tournament.

The annual Wisbech St Mary tournament - one of the biggest events of its kind in the country - attracted record crowds as 400 teams from as far afield as London and Yorkshire battled it out for glory over two days.

A feast of football was played out across 28 pitches, involving some 3,000 players and 112 referees.

Saturday’s action was greeted by glorious sunshine before the heavy rain eventually arrived late on the Sunday.

Paul Albutt, one of the organising committee, said: "The weather was kind to us up until about 3pm on Sunday when the heavens opened but it did not dampen any spirits and the football continued.

"There was some great football played over the weekend with many of the teams impressed with the set up again and rebooking for next year before they went home.

"Everyone worked tremendously hard over the weekend to ensure the success of the event.

"We would like to thank everyone concerned from players, referees, volunteers to ensure the tournament maintains its reputation as not only the largest festival in East Anglia, but also the best organised."

Albutt confirmed that 150 teams had already reserved their places for next year’s event.

This year’s tournament coinciding with the Saints’ 30th anniversary.
