Non-League Day wins for March Town, Parson Drove and Whittlesey Athletic

It was a great day for the three Fenland teams in action this afternoon, with March Town, Parson Drove and Whittlesey Athletic all recording victories.

Most impressive on the International break-inspired Non-League Day was Athletic, who pulled off a surprise 2-1 win at promotion-chasing Stanway Pegasus in Thurlow Nunn First Division North.

The Essex side had only lost once in 16 previous games at West Street, conceding just 14 goals.

But The Blues made up for October’s 5-0 home defeat with a second consecutive victory on the road, leading 2-0 at the break before conceding in the second half.

The goals came from Joseph Graham in only his second appearance for the club and young Isaac Jobling with his sixth of the campaign.

Whittlesey, who are now 13th in the table, have won eight and drawn two of their last 14 games to pull 15 points clear of the relegation area they once occupied.

In the same division, Parson Drove are up to ninth after thrashing 16th-place Wivenhoe Town 4-0, in the process ending an eight-match run without a win at Main Road stretching back to October.

With Arran Duke at a wedding, his assistant Callum Brown took over managerial duties, seeing Corey Kingston grab a hat-trick to make it 15 in 26 games for him this season. The other goal came from Stefano Cavozzi, who now has four in seven.

In the United Counties Premier South, two goals from Toby Allen saw March on their way to a 4-1 home win over struggling Easington Sports at The GER.

Ex-Downham Town man James Moore went straight into the starting line-up after signing in the week from Newmarket Town. Moore netted 18 times in 45 games for Downham last season but had found the going tougher at Step Four, scoring two in 15 for The Jockeys in the Isthmian North.

Allen fired March into a two-goal lead with two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half before the 16th-place visitors hit back with one of their own. However, Matty Foy’s 12th of the season made it 3-1 at the break. Sub Denny Escorcio scored the fourth in the second half.

With five to play, the fourth-place Hares are now four points clear of the pack chasing the play-off places and also have a game in hand.

March Town: Gill, Burrows (Henderson), Brumby, Withers (Biggs), Emmington, Green, Saunders (Belton), Foy, Allen, Moore (Escorcio), Cotton. Star man: Toby Allen. Attendance: 184.

Wisbech Town were without a game today and face a tough fixture next week when they visit a Lincoln United team locked in a three-way battle for the United Counties North title with Eastwood and Bourne Town, both teams beaten by the Fenmen this season.

March also face a tricky away trip, at second-place Aylestone Park, while Parson Drove are at 11th-place Holland and Whittlesey entertain third-place Harwich & Parkeston.
