James Licquorice impresses for Fenland drivers as stock car racing returns to King's Lynn

James Licquorice put in another strong performance at the Unlimited Banger British Team Championship at King’s Lynn last Sunday to help guide his Dover Boys team to a runner-up finish in the entertainer points.

Known as the Icebreaker, the event really lived up to it’s name – with freezing temperatures and fog throughout the afternoon. Despite that, drivers and their teams did some exceptional work in the pits to continue turning cars around and put on a great show on track.

And if Sunday’s performance was a preview of what fans have to look forward to from the Licquorice team in 2023, then they are in for a real treat this season.

Licquorice was on it from the start and started piling on the entertainer points from the drop of the first green flag.

He went on to give some fantastic performances in the heats, but unfortunately failed to grid for the final. Fortunately the work he had done in the hits, aided by a strong showing from his team mates in the final, propelled the team into a runner-up spot.

“What an epic day today has been,” Liquorice said.

“Every race my hardworking crew were pulling the boot off the cage. Unfortunately the prop broke when I was leaving the pits to grid for the final. Thanks to the team for a brilliant day. I am proper buzzing right now.”

Team OMB was down to only two members by the time the meeting started. Mark Freeman and Daniel Clarke both put on a tremendous show for the team.

Dan Clarke picked up a material award for his cool taxi which he put to good use, and Mark Freeman was in brilliant form and took home an entertainer award in his first heat for an outstanding display.

The South Yorkshire-based Silver Boys won the main points competition, with the Peterborough-based Aftermath scooping the top entertaining team award.

In the junior bangers, Rhys Parrin was racing from a career first red top after a great finish to the 2022 season. The additional handicap did little to slow down the flying youngster, who had the best results of all of Fenland’s junior banger drivers in action with a fantastic runner-up finish in his heat backed up with a ninth place finish in the final.

Rhys was the only local driver to finish the final in the top ten.

Riley Crowson also had a good day, picking up two top-ten finishes in his heats with a second place in the opening heat being his best finish – whilst Levi Murkin was also amongst the top places throughout the day.

Jade Ellis and Lincoln Douglas were unlucky and had nothing to show for some great drives.

Racing returns to King’s Lynn on Sunday, February 5 when the 1500cc bangers take place in their version of the 1500cc Banger Icebreaker in what promises to be another great afternoon of action.
