Dan Martell Wisbech Men's hockey hat-trick in vain during Bury St Edmunds 6-5 thriller loss

Bury St Edmunds 6 Wisbech Men 5

After the winter break Wisbech fancied their chances in this rearranged fixture and put Bury under immense pressure, but it was the home side who took the lead.

The Wisbech response was instant, equalising through Gary Freear after a short corner move broke down. This was a topsy-turvy affair, where no team went clear by more than one goal at any stage, but it was Wisbech who found themselves chasing again after another Bury goal.

It was Daniel Martell who equalised from a good short corner finish to make the score 2-2. Wisbech wanted a strong finish to the first half but found themselves 3-2 down after a well worked move.

As ever, heads stayed high and the men in red came out fighting and were soon back into the game thanks to another Martell short corner goal.

Wisbech smelled blood and continued to apply the pressure, getting the goal they deserved and taking the lead for the first and only time thanks to an excellent finish from Sam Markillie.

Wisbech were ahead for all of one minute, and were behind in just as short a time as Bury came storming back for two quick goals.

Wisbech kept fighting and were level again thanks to Man of the Match Martell scoring his hat-trick from another short corner routine. There was still time for one more goal, and unfortunately it went to the home side as Wisbech pressed for a winner of their own.

Another improved performance left Wisbech feeling down but certainly buoyed from their ability to put chances away.

Man of Match: Dan Martell.

Wisbech Ladies II 9 Alford & District 1

After the long Christmas break Wisbech knew this was a nice easy game to get back into it, but did make it a lot harder for themselves.

Wisbech soon started moving the ball about to get their first goal but Alford pulled one straight back with Wisbech pushing forward and leaving the defence wide open.

The game was very frustrating with the opposition piling their players in front of goal making it very difficult for Wisbech to score but the score was 4-1 at half-time.

In the second half Wisbech still piled the pressure on, making the final score 9-1 according to the umpires, but when Wisbech counted their goal tally it made it 10.

Goals: Sam Pritchard 5, Emma Baker 4, Izzy Gowler. A few lessons learned which were well needed ready for their top of the league clash against Horncastle next weekend.

Player of Match: Sam Pritchard.

Wisbech Ladies 3’s 11 Ely 3rds 1

A rearranged fixture was played on Sunday.

Wisbech started strongly work Alana Pritchard scoring from open play. This was closely followed by her second. Ely had a goal disallowed that was deflected from outside the D into the back of the net by a Wisbech player.

This spurred on the home team , who saw Lily Cooper slot home, followed by an Amelia Garfoot goal. Nancy Davies was not able to convert a penalty flick opportunity but Alana Pritchard was able to bag her hat trick before half time.

The second half saw Wisbech come out strongly, Amelia Garfoot scoring her second. Nancy Davies scored the next goal from a short corner. Ely bagged a consolation goal that caught the defence off guard.

Good movement of the ball from out of defence down the right hand side of the pitch saw Lucy Prior score from the top of the D. A goal mouth scrabble saw Nancy Davies reverse stick her second underneath the keeper. The goal tally was completed by player of the match Amelia Garfoot who completed her hat trick.

Olivia Jackson made her debut for the senior ladies' teams, whilst playing out of her usual position is a promising prospect for the future.

Player of Match: Amelia Garfoot.
