March Town win Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup Final 2-0 against Ely City
March Town overcame the disappointment of play-off defeat to win the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup Final 2-0 against Ely City tonight.
Ash Taylor’s men bounced back from Sunday’s UCL Premier South loss at Rugby Borough with early goals in each half to lift the county cup for the first time in 70 years.
Against Thurlow Nunn Premier opposition who also suffered play-off semi-final defeat at the weekend, March took a fourth-minute lead through captain Craig Gillies, who headed home a corner for his 25th goal of the season.
In front of a large travelling support at Cambridge City’s new Community Stadium, Flo Tsaguim sealed the victory two minutes into the second half, blasting into the roof of the net from the left of the box.
Former March favourite Jack Friend played up front for City, and Bedford Town midfielder Lewis Hilliard guested on dual registration for March.
It’s been a memorable season for The Hares, who defend the Hinchingbrooke Cup in the final against UCL North opponents Deeping Rangers next Tuesday at Yaxley, after finishing fourth in the league and reaching the Fourth Round of the FA Vase - the furthest they have ever progressed in the competition.
