Jordan Gill happy and relaxed ahead of big Zelfa Barrett clash

Jordan Gill looks and feels in great shape ahead of his world title eliminator with Zelfa Barrett in Manchester on April 13.

The 29-year-old Chatteris fighter was happy and relaxed as he chatted to the ‘Seconds Out’ YouTube channel at his media day in Harlow.

‘The Thrill’ will be fighting Barrett in front of his home Manchester audience at the AO Arena.

He said: “I’m happy, I’ve been working hard and progressing and looking forward to big fights. After the Kiko Martinez defeat (fourth round knockout in October 2022) I was really in the abyss and I didn’t know whether I’d have to come back in a small show with a six or eight rounder.

“But the opportunity with Michael Conlan came around and I took the risk, got the reward (seventh round knockout win in December) and now I’m back in the spotlight.

“You’re only ever one win from changing your trajectory and I’m excited to keep on progressing. I think it’s going to be a good fight and I’m expecting Zelfa to be on his A-game and want to put on a good performance in front of his home fans in Manchester, and I’m looking forward to performing well too.

“Anyone who has ever got into professional boxing wants to be a world champion and that’s what I got into it for too. Now I’m hopefully one win away from getting a shot.

“You have to look at history and history repeats itself. All the best fighters have lost and it is how you come back from it, learn from it, develop and push on to that level where you do win a world title. I’ve learnt from my losses and I’m trying to learn from my wins as well.”

Gill said he is enjoying training under Ben Davison, and alongside good friend Leigh Wood and former World heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua.

“I train hard every day, I’m very consistent and I enjoy it. You never know when your last training camp is going to be so you’ve got to make it fun while you can.

“Ben breaks down opponents very well, trains every fighter different and develops them, adapting them to their opponent. It’s very different to a lot of trainers but I’m just blessed to be working for someone with an approach I believe in.

“It’s great to be training with Leigh again and seeing how he operates in the gym. We trained and lived together for years and we’re now helping each other with sparring and bits of tech work.

“It’s good to have world champions like AJ in the gym too. It’s inspiring to see him maintain his work ethic after all he has done and that’s why I really look up to him.”
