Wisbech Town players warned over futures after poor display at Sherwood Colliery

Wisbech Town players were given a stark warning after a shocking first half display in their 4-0 defeat at Sherwood Colliery on Saturday.

Coach Alex Street said players would be performing for their futures in the last seven games of the season after a poor 45 minutes saw the Fenmen trailing 3-0 in this United Counties League Premier Division North fixture.

Sixth placed Colliery raced into a 3-0 lead inside the first 20 minutes, with goals from William Norcross (2) and Ethan Wiesztort. Wisbech battled more after the break, but didn't manage a shot on target in the game and conceded again two minutes from time, Norcross netting his third.

Defender Stacey Freeman has joined the club on dual registration with Stamford and played against Sherwood. The former Lewes and Whitehawk player is a model who appeared in the E4 show Shipwrecked. Mo Janneh, who was previously thought to be ruled out for the rest of the season through illness, was also fit to start.

With manager Leon Mettam serving a one-match ground ban, assistant manager Danny Brooks and coach Alex Street led the team, the latter saying: "There's just seven games to go now and some of these lads have got a lot to prove to see if they are here or not next year. Otherwise the gaffer will just bring more bodies in and these people will be left behind.

"The first half performance was really poor. There was no desire to win, they didn't put their bodies on the line and they were second best to tackles. They weren't winning second balls or first contact. These things cost us and that's a mentality thing that's got to be changed and will be changed over time.

"It took a rollicking at half time to get a reaction and, don't get me wrong, we huffed and puffed in the second half, the players ran round and gave it their all, but they should be giving more for the town and we are all disappointed."

Street did reserve praise for a few, however, saying: "The two centre halves gave their all to defend for us, and Kegan Everington had a really good game in central midfield but when you are carrying players who are below five out of ten it is just not possible.

"We try to be hard to beat when we come away from home but today we just accepted losing and got rolled over. Teams know it and think we are a weak touch."

Things don't get easier for Wisbech, who entertain league leaders Loughborough University on Tuesday, before mid-table Heanor Town visit Fountain Fresh Park on Saturday. Street added: "The gaffer will expect a reaction."
