Wisbech host Deeping Rangers after confirming their safety in the United Counties League Premier Division North

Wisbech Town manager Luke Hipwell has spoken of his relief after a 2-0 win at Melton Town confirmed the club's place at Step 5 next season.

The Fenmen went into the game needing one more win, and they duly delivered with goals in either half of the United Counties League Premier Division clash.

Speaking after the game, Hipwell said: "Overall, we didn't have so much of the ball, but we deserved to win as we had the better chances, first half and second half.

"There were a couple of contentious moments where we could have had a couple of penalties, but we had one job on Saturday - to make sure that we were still at this level of football.

"That's been the key thing since I came here, to guarantee the safety of this football club at Step 5.

"We were starting Step 6 in the face when I came through the door and in terms of taking the job on, and I can be honest now as we're safe, it was do I or don't I?

"I didn't want to be the person to take Wisbech Town to its lowest level of football if we'd been relegated.

"It's two-fold. Step 6 is nowhere near the level this football club should be at and, secondly, if you go down, there's no guarantee that you'll come back up because of the competitive leagues around the region.

"It's a really good day, but let's not get too ahead of ourselves. We've guaranteed our safety, but now we've got to push on."

The Wisbech boss admitted it had been a testing few months since he arrived at Fountain Fresh Park - but now it is time to build on the club's progress of the past few months.

"It's been draining," he said.

"You come in with eight games gone, no points, a minus-23 goal difference and one goal scored. That was when the football club was at its lowest point, but it has been on an upward trajectory since then.

"If we can keep this group together and add two or three, I really think we can push on next season."

Sam Bennett gave Luke Hipwell's side a 1-0 advantage going into the break with his 11th goal of the season before Rob Conyard made sure of the three points by adding a second goal shortly after the restart.

"We were a little bit tentative to start with, but we grew into the game and got to grips with their system in the end," said Hipwell.

Wisbech are seven points clear of the drop zone going into their final home game of the campaign today against Deeping, who are managed by former Fenmen boss Brett Whaley.

"We can go into the game knowing that a point would see us break the 40-point barrier and that would be a really good return considering where we were."

Hipwell will conduct his post-match interview on the pitch after today's derby at Fountain Fresh Park, before the club hosts a fans' forum in the bar after the match.

Wisbech Town: Lakin, Falcao (Wilson), Barker, Harris, Matless, Knowles, Harris, Lennon (Williams), Conyard (Young), Bennett (Acheampong), Ward.
