Elsworth regain top spot in Wisbech Table Tennis League with win over Wizards




Elsworth regained top spot in the latest round of Wisbech Table Tennis League Premier Division fixtures.

They took on Wizards in a battle for first place, who desperately needed a win – but against unbeaten Elsworth, it was a tough call.

Dan Fielding produced an immaculate maximum, whilst Jaroslaw Chrzanowski backed him with two wins.

Wizards fought back with Brett Heppenstall, Alan Ashbury and Grant Brightey wins over Mark Conway. Brett also scored a fine win over Jarowslaw.

By the last game, it was 5-4 to Elsworth, who promptly took the doubles for a 6-4 win. With a game in hand and still a week to go, they must surely feel the title is theirs.

Inbetweeners were in a determined mood against Pegg Scaffolding, and Clive Welsman and Derek Kiddle both scored maximums.

Sam Kiddle scored two as Inbetweeners ran out 9-1 winners. For Pegg, a lone Peter Pegg 14-12, fifth end win was their only reward.

Exiles against Eagles – a match where Exiles prevailed against the odds.

Not only did they have man of the match Keith Phillips in great form, but they also had to contend with a health concern for Steve Barrett, which forced him to withdraw from the match.

The game ended 5-5.

Trojans made it a difficult night for Nets &Edges, with man of the match Wayne Mason in typically unassailable form for a straight sets maximum. Supported well by David Lemmon (3), Steve Mason (2) and a Wayne and David doubles win, Trojans won 9-1.

In the First Division, a marathon 5-5 draw was one of the longest league games in memory as man of the match Mark Littlechild beat Kevin Buck.

Mark went on to complete a maximum, whilst Jeff Chung won against Peter Munch, before Mark and Jeff took the doubles for a 5-5 draw.

Warlords points came from two each from Kevin and Guntars Briedis, plus a Peter Munch win over Vaughan Parker. With one match left, Warlords’ title ambitions must now be severely dented.

Stingers regained first spot in the league with a convincing 9-1 win over 5 Stars A.

Man of the match Paul Reed, Igors Scekalevs and David Patrick all scored

maximums.

5 Stars A brought up the rear with a doubles win from Alfie Yarrow and Paul Gay over Paul and Igors.

Ramblers found Wanderers an unstoppable force in their match.

Man of the match David Nicholas, Steve Kent and

Mike Smith all scored maximums, then David and Steve took the doubles for a 10-0 win.

For Ramblers, Mark Spinks was particularly unlucky when he narrowly lost to Mike 14-12, and he put up some resistance in his other games.

Youthful 5 Stars B found exprienced Spartans too much to handle as man of the match Gordon Lyttle, Andy Bayes and Graham Sheppard all scored maximums, then sealed the 10-0 win with an Andy and Gordon winning in the doubles.
