Wisbech businesses targeted in crime spree
Businesses across the Wisbech area have been counting the cost following a series of break-ins over the past couple of weeks.
Police are investigating the incidents, which they say are more than likely linked, and has seen one eatery targeted twice in a fortnight.
Frustrated business owners have been posting images captured on CCTV at their premises and have been apologising to customers after being forced to close their doors while police forensic officers carry out their work.
In most incidences there have been at least two people involved and they have had their faces heavily covered in a bid to conceal their identity.
Two eateries were targeted on Friday night – The Sportsman Pub at Elm, where they smashed a window to gain access, smashed the till and caused quite a mess.
The same night, but in the early hours of Saturday morning they smashed a lock to gain access to the Blues Bar and Restaurant in Leverington Road.
They took some cash and stock and the business remained closed for the whole of Saturday.
The Oasis Grill Bar in Mount Pleasant Road, Wisbech has been hit twice on July 29 and again on Tuesday (8). Both times they have caused major damage smashing windows and doors to gain access, before making off with drinks and the premises’ till.
Charlies based at the Locomotive on Lynn Road was also hit on Tuesday (8) and the premises had to remain for a while to enable the forensic work to be done.
Other business targeted since the end of July include the Jolly Fryer in North End, Wisbech, it was hit on Tuesday (8) with the culprit smashing the door to gain access.
Wisbech Ex-Servicemen’s Club and Worzals have also been attacked.
A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police said: “We are aware of a number of reports of business burglaries in Wisbech since the start of the month.
“We believe the incidents may be linked and an investigation is ongoing to bring those responsible to justice.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact police online or via 101. Business owners can find advice on how to protect themselves and their property from burglars on the force website.”
