Wisbech barber shop seeks approval for shutters to protect against crime
A Wisbech barbers has gained public support for retrospective plans to instal roller shutters to protect the premises.
Banks Barber Shop in Chapel Road already has the black shutters in place and is now seeking permission from Fenland District Council to keep them
The plan backed by a design and access statement drawn up by Alexandra Design explains the shutters will help protect the premises from vandalism and break-ins.
It says: "The roller shutter design has been derived from the nearby properties, one being next door, as the best form of protection for owners of shops to prevent vandalism/breaking an entry."
Adding: "The shutters have been designed and manufactured specially to fit inside the existing openings and minimise protrusion."
A heritage statement also submitted with the application explains the upper floor will remain untouched, apart from a "fresh lick of paint" and adds: "The applicant has spent time and money transforming the shop into an attractive upgraded shop that was once in need of a freshen up."
Numerous members of the public have commented on the plans and all support the idea.
Neighbouring resident Emma Hardscastle said: "I think the shutters are very tastefully done, they provide the security and reassurance a small business needs when many are finding it hard to survive. Nobody should loose sleep over wondering how safe their livelihood or property is overnight.
"Unfortunately Wisbech has it's vandalism problems, not only do the shutters provide more public safety and stop a small local business having to cater financially for any vandalism, break ins and stolen goods that are likely to occur without that protection."
A view echoed by Darren Shepherd from Murrow, who explained: "I drive past the new barber shop almost every day on my way to work. I noticed the shutters and was quite pleased with the way they tidy up the area when closed, nice dark colour, looks really smart. Other businesses should do the same. Maybe with a company logo painted on the outside."
