March will join national celebration of 80th VE Day anniversary

March will celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a sing-song in the town park.

March town councillors heard at their meeting on Monday that plans are underway to mark the milestone anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe on May 8 next year.

Councillor Nigel Spence Spencer said the King’s Pagent Master has written to towns and cities up and down the country asking them to run events to mark the occasion.

He said the plan for March was for the town crier to make an announcement at the War Memorial at 8am, this would be followed by the raising of the flag at 9am.

Then in the evening there will be a lighting of the beacon in West End Park and Cllr Spencer said it was hoped there would then be a sing-song with choirs, school children and the community all joining in.
