Wisbech’s Remembrance Day coincides with 100 years of Royal British Legion branch
A town’s Remembrance Day weekend was extra special this year as it celebrated the 100th anniversary of a military charity branch.
Wisbech’s Remembrance weekend saw many attend including Colonel Mark Knight MBE DL, who was representing the King.
On Armistice Day, MP Steve Barclay laid a wreath at the war memorial as part of a small service with the town’s Royal British Legion.
Together, they marked ‘the 11th hour of the 11th day’ with two minutes of silence.
Remembrance Sunday was commemorated with a parade, led by the Army Cadets of Peterborough, which formed on the Market Square and proceeded to the Castle Square.
Decon Matthew Bradbury took the opportunity to hold a moment of silence to allow everyone to reflect.
Others in attendance included Mayor Peter Human, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire Dr Bharatkumar N Khetani, and Andrew Sharpe of the Royal British Legion.
This year’s Remembrance Day was particularly special as Wisbech’s RBL celebrated its centenary.
Toby North, chairperson of the Wisbech branch, said: “The Remembrance Day was really important to us because after just celebrating our centenary, we wanted to make sure the event was conducted properly – and it was.
“We put a lot into our poppy appeal, by having tables in supermarkets and a poppy shop in town.
“We are very grateful to Julian Fox for allowing us to set up the poppy shop in his building. I have to say, as chairman, thank you, everyone, for showing such generosity and kindness.
“I think we have raised a significant amount.”
