The Light Cinema in Wisbech turns 10 in style with guests enjoying film premiere
A popular Wisbech cinema has celebrated a milestone birthday.
Yesterday evening, The Light Cinema invited guests to watch a premiere of Furiosa before its general release today to celebrate its 10th anniversary in the town.
Among the guests was Wisbech Mayor, Sidney Imafidon who thanked the cinema CEO James Morris, and Beth Brighty, the manager, for the “amazing” work they do.
The Mayor said he had been to The Light about six times in the last year. “I enjoy coming here because it is relaxing, it's clean and tidy and they have a great selection of films, and lI like to support anything that is in Wisbech”, he said.
“It's nice to see as you come into town and it tells you what to expect, that there is entertainment and things to do in the town. It stands out and portrays the town in a positive light.”
He said the last film he saw at the venue before Thursday was the Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black and he said: “It was absolutely brilliant.”
One thing Cllr Imafidon has noticed is the family spirit within the cinema team.
He added: “Its a very positive place to work and there are people who have been working here for the past 10 years. I hope The Light will be in the town for another 10 years and many more to come.
James Morris, CEO of the cinema, said The Light is a big part of the community, offering a whole range of content, events and activities to give the people of Wisbech a broad spectrum of entertainment.
He said: “It is such an iconic building, it's a real presence when you drive in - you can see it as you come along the road, it is in a great position within the town.
“Cinemas are evolving and we are evolving with them. I'm looking forward to seeing a range of music events and concerts and maybe the Euros if England get far enough along.
“We have now got fibre-connectivity here so we are able to bring a whole range if content, from theatre and opera to music and sporting events.”
James is looking forward to where the next 10 years will take the business.
To celebrate the birthday, the cinema held a week of celebrations and events to mark it in style including a competition with the Fenland Citizen, with tickets up for grabs.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the venue is still offering two cinema tickets for £10 until Sunday, June 2, and will also be offering two for £10 on Ice Blasts over the same period.
