Tesco Extra in Wisbech evacuated after camper van catches fire

A town supermarket was evacuated after a camper van caught fire in an underground car park.

Firefighters rushed to the Tesco Extra store on Cromwell Road, Wisbech yesterday at 12.44pm after the vehicle set alight.

Crews from the town were joined by others from March and Thorney to battle the blaze, which was described as “well-developed” on their arrival. It subsequently spread to nearby cars.

Wearing breathing apparatus, the crews extinguished the fire using hose reels – and had returned to their stations by 3pm.

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Service spokesperson said the cause of the fire was accidental.

The Tesco store was evacuated, but staff say customers have been allowed back in this morning.
