Eight years on and Wisbech pensioner's vicious murder is still a mystery
Yesterday marked the Eighth anniversary of one of Wisbech’s must disturbing murder cases, the savage killing of pensioner Una Crown.
The murder of retired post mistress Una is still as much a mystery today as it was when her body was found burned in the hallway of her Magazine Lane bungalow on Sunday, January 13, 2013.
The 86-year-old had not been seen alive since Friday, January 11, when she had done her weekly shop at a local supermarket, but she had spoken to a friend over the phone at about 5pm on the Saturday.
A post-mortem examination revealed Una died of stab wounds to her neck and chest. Her body was set on fire in an apparent bid to disguise her injuries and destroy evidence.
An engagement ring she had worn for 40 years and £40 in cash, which she had got in cashback on the Friday from the supermarket was missing.
A £10,000 reward from Crimestoppers is still on offer for information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the killer.
Over the years there have been numerous appeals for help in trying to find the perpetrator, the case was even featured on the BBC’s Crimewatch programme in the hope it would inspire new leads.
The knife used to stab Una, which police believe was taken to her home by the killer, has never been found.
Police have long believed the key to solving the horrific case lies with the public, and that someone out there holds vital information.
A police spokesman said Una’s case has now been handed tot he cold case team but added: “No undetected murder is ever closed and the team will continue to regularly review it and pursue any lines of inquiry, which may come to light.”
