Clarkson Surgery closure in Wisbech was due to man suffering mental health crisis and assaulting member of staff

Police have revealed that a GP surgery closure two weeks ago was due to a man suffering a mental health crisis.

The Clarkson Surgery on De Havilland Road announced on Friday, June 20, that it had to shut to patients – with appointments cancelled.

Fenland Police confirmed officers were called at about 9.20am, after reports of a fight where a man suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn.

In a statement on June 23, a spokesperson for the surgery said the incident involved a patient and no staff had been harmed, although they are being supported following the incident.”

However, a statement released today by the police said that a member of staff was assaulted.

The spokesperson said: “Our officers investigated an incident at Clarkson Surgery. A man had entered the surgery and appeared to be suffering a mental health crisis.

“He was taken to hospital with what were believed to be self-inflicted injuries.

“A member of staff who tried to intervene was assaulted and suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

“A crime was raised for assault, but the complaint was withdrawn, and no further action was taken.”
