NHS leaders’ plea to use right NHS services over Easter

The NHS across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are urging the public to be prepared for the Easter break and industrial action following the weekend, and only use A&E for emergencies and life-threatening situations.

Over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend and beyond, it’s essential that local people use the right NHS service for their illness or injury, ensuring A&E can help the people who need it most.

There are lots of NHS services open and available to local people during the long weekend, such minor injury units, urgent treatment centres, pharmacies and NHS 111.

Additionally, recent figures show that 4,476 people contacted NHS 111 for a prescription when they had run out of medication in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough last year, with 210 people contacting NHS 111 over the Easter weekend 2022. This can be avoided if people plan ahead and make sure they get prescriptions as soon as possible.

Dr Fiona Head, Chief Medical Officer at Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICS, said, “A&E departments work tirelessly to treat patients with serious illnesses and injuries, and they are still under considerable pressure. It’s important people know that A&E isn’t the only choice for health care over the Easter weekend, and it’s crucial people choose the right health service to ensure A&E is kept free for those who really need it. “We can all do little things to help the NHS and you can help your local NHS by making sure you have enough of your usual medication to last over the Easter weekend, as well as keeping a well-stocked first aid kit at home.”
