Tesco opens new Chatteris store
Tesco welcomed customers to its new superstore in Chatteris today (Thursday).
The Fenland Way supermarket, which replaces the former Jack's discount shop, has been welcomed by a leading councillor – and has also promised to have a positive impact through its community schemes.
At the official opening attended by Fenland District Council leader Chris Boden and portfolio holder for economic growth Ian Benny, cheques for £250 were handed to Magpas air ambulance and the Cam Sight charity.
Mr Benny said: "To see Tesco investing in the town is a great thing for Chatteris. It means more competition in the town, which means lower prices in these economically-pushed times.
"It's very good for local people and I also think there will be more development on this site. I'm also very pleased to see the Tesco Finest range introduced as that brings a different choice of shopping."
Over the last five years, the supermarket’s Wisbech customers have helped to raise £269,000 for 126 groups and good causes through its blue token voting scheme known as Tesco Community Grants.
And since its launch in 2015, The Community Food Connection Scheme has also donated 337,000 meals to local charities, ensuring no surplus food goes to waste.
The store also promises a combination of Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices.
Opening hours are 7am-11pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sundays.
Communications manager Keith Jackson said: “We are extremely excited to be opening our new Chatteris store and helping to serve the local community. As a former Jack’s store, we want to continue to offer great value to our customers with an increased product range and the benefits of Tesco Clubcard and Clubcard pricing.
“We’ve retained colleagues from the old store so there should be some familiar faces as well as new colleagues joining the team. We know that local knowledge and experience will be so important as we look to build connections and play our part in the community.”
