New park attraction to make a splash in Wisbech
Summer is set to kick off with a splash in Wisbech as work on the town’s new family water attraction gets underway.
Work on the new Splashpad in Wisbech Park started this week and is set to be complete in time for the school summer holidays.
Following an idea for the attraction from Wisbech Town Council, Fenland District Council successfully bid for funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority to develop the Splashpad as part of the town’s Growing Fenland project.
It will be part of a much wider regeneration scheme, with new toddler play equipment, a jogging track, and the Wisbech Park Pavilion building to come later in the year.
The Splashpad, which will include a range of exciting water features including fountains and jets, is being created by leading aquatic play specialists Ustigate Ltd, which has a track record of providing splash parks across the country.
The facility will include a state-of-the-art flow through system where all of the sequenced features will be fed by the mains supply; controlled by touch pads to provide the water displays on demand for a period before being turned off when not in use.
Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland’s portfolio holder responsible for parks and open spaces, said: “I’m delighted that this project is coming to fruition. It will provide something more for families to enjoy that is totally accessible to all ages and abilities, free of charge.
“It will be great for keeping kids active and cool on hot summer days and will draw people into the town too, which will be great for local businesses and the community.”
Councillor Samantha Hoy, Wisbech Town Council leader and Fenland Council cabinet member, added: “Wisbech Town Council put forward the idea for the Splashpad as it provides lots of water fun without the dangers posed by swimming pools, which also attract debris and need more maintenance. We worked up the scheme with Fenland District Council and now I’m so pleased it’s on its way.”
Michelle Minns-Sykes, of Ustigate Ltd, said: “We are delighted to be starting works on Wisbech Park Splashpad. The new water play facility has a favourite for every age and ability with its Tipping Bucket Trio, low level Frog, ground jets and activators. Wisbech Park will be a great destination for all friends and families to enjoy a great day out and a place where many happy memories will be made.”
