New book will detail towns pubs and inns past and present
The Friends of Wisbech and Fenland Museum are set to publish their latest book written by Andrew Ketley and detailing the towns inns, taverns and beer-houses.
The Friends have published a series of books of photos by Geoff Hastings and written by Andy Ketley. Over 2,000 copies of the series of Images of Wisbech have been sold to date, the most recent Images of Wisbech No5 was released last month and copies are selling well both here and overseas. These have raised thousands of pounds to support the museum.
Copies are sold through the museum gift shop, Community Hub at Etcetera (instore and online) York Row and Bygones Restaurant, Hill street.
This month we publish they are publishing Wisbech Inns, Taverns and Beer-Houses: Past and Present by Andrew B.N. Ketley. Volume 1 will include pubs with names starting A to C.
Andy has a copy of Arthur Oldham's The Inns and Taverns of Wisbech: a survey from the earliest times to 1950 and has spent about 20 years researching local pubs.
Oldham wrote his book in 1950 and it wasn't published by Cambridgeshire Libraries until the 1970s.
He died in 1980 and it was the printed by Spindrift in 1993. Andy has added 70 years of pub history to that covered by Oldham.
The friends are holding their annual meeting tomorrow (Thursday) at The Luxe Cinema, Wisbech at 8pm. Preceding this will be an illustrated talk on Inns and Taverns and Images of Wisbech.
