March Poppy Appeal organisers are looking for sponsors for lamp post poppies
Organisers of the annual March Poppy Appeal are making a plea for sponsors for a special initiative aimed at marking the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1.
Alec and Kay Larham, from March Royal British Legion, are looking for people to donate towards the cost of special event poppies which they aim to put on lamp posts throughout the town centre for this year's Remembrance Sunday which happens to fall on the eleventh of the eleventh.
Kay said: "The idea is to put large poppies on each of the 31 lamp posts along the stretch from outside St Peter's Church in High Street through to the end of Broad Street.
"The idea is to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War One and to say thank-you to all those who served, sacrificed and changed our world.
"We are appealing for businesses, organisations or individuals to sponsor one of these special poppies with a minimum donation of £10.
"If we get more than 31 sponsors then we will put up more than one poppy on some of the lamp posts. We think it will be a nice touch for the annual Remembrance Day parade."
There are 228 names of March servicemen who lost their lives in WW1 on the town's war memorial and a further 104 names of those died during WW2.
