Manea station car park on track for April arrival
A new car park for Manea Railway Station is now set to be completed in April 2022 after several key milestones were reached.
Work initially began on the new car park for Manea Railway Station following a turf-cutting ceremony in late September 2021.
Despite the impact of coronavirus and delays following heavy rainfall, which waterlogged the site, developers Danaher and Walsh have worked throughout the winter to ensure consistent progress.
With ground conditions improving recently, the project has built up a head of steam and a number of key points in the development have now been reached. All below ground apparatus, such as drainage ducts, has now been installed as well as the majority of the kerbing, paving and lighting columns. Surfacing is also set to commence later this month as the project approaches completion.
More than 100 parking spaces, including disabled bays, will be available once the site is finished with a range of additional benefits such as a new cycle shelter, CCTV coverage and low energy lighting all being realised as well. Following discussions with potential leaseholders, the car park will now be maintained and managed by Fenland District Council once work has concluded.
Cllr Chris Seaton, Fenland's cabinet member for transport and chair of the Fenland Stations Regeneration Project Board, said: “Thanks to the hard work and persistence of our contractors, and all of those involved with the project, this valuable new asset for Manea is now beginning to take shape.”
“The arrival of the car park marks an exciting time for the local community as it will not just make rail a more viable option for Manea residents, it will also bring with it tourism and economic benefits, whilst delivering sustainable transport options right to our doorstep.”
The new facilities are just one of many regeneration schemes being delivered across Fenland as part of Fenland District Council's Railway Station Masterplans project, which is funded by £9.5million from the Cambridgeshireand Peterborough Combined Authority, led by Mayor Dr Nik Johnson, and with support from station operator Greater Anglia.
