Wisbech murder suspect David Newton who denies killing Una Crown will give no evidence in trial
Despite pleading not guilty, murder-accused David Newton will give no evidence during his ongoing trial.
The jury returned to Cambridge Crown Court today for a short period of time to be told that they would be hearing no evidence from Newton’s defence.
Newton previously denied murdering 86-year-old Una Crown, who was found dead in her bungalow on Magazine Lane in Wisbech on January 13, 2013.
Mrs Crown had multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest and her body had also been set on fire.
The prosecution finished giving their evidence last Tuesday, before the jury was dismissed for three days of legal discussions.
It was expected that Newton’s defence barrister, Henry Grunwald KC, would on Monday present evidence to support his client’s not guilty plea.
However, Mr Grunwald said that Newton refuses to answer questions and said no mitigating evidence would be given on his behalf.
Tomorrow, the jury will be guided by Judge Justice Garnham before they hear closing statements from prosecution and defence.
