Horse owners and livestock farmers will be able to learn more about trailer towing during a safety event later this month.

NFU Mutual in Wisbech is hosting a trailer and towing event with EMG motor group at its Kings Lynn showroom on Friday, October 23, between 10am and 4pm.

The insurer’s horsebox and trailer safety campaign, which has won awards since 2011, aims to raise awareness of the rules and regulations surrounding the use of horseboxes and trailers along with highlight the importance of regular safety checks.

Stephen Hutchinson, agent at NFU Mutual’s Wisbech Office said: “As an insurer we were concerned about the number of accidents and breakdowns involving trailers, particularly those transporting horses or livestock.

“We were also aware that many people are unsure about the best vehicle/trailer combination for their needs and the legislation surrounding the use of trailers.

“By joining forces with EMG motor group we hope to spread the safety message to local people and answer some of their questions about trailers and towing, helping them stay safe and legal.”

Horse owners, farmers and anyone else with an interest in trailers and towing is invited to pop along to the dealership on Beveridge Way, Hardwick Narrows, Kings Lynn.

On- hand during the day will be a transport consultant who will be able to answer questions about the rules and regulations surrounding the use of trailers; towing weights; licence requirements and vehicle/trailer combinations.

Visitors to the event will also receive a free goody bag and learn how to conduct basic safety checks, including tyre safety, breakaway cables and floor safety.

Mr Hutchinson said: “Up to 56 per cent of breakdowns involving trailers and horseboxes are as a result of tyre problems.

“By equipping people with some basic safety skills and knowledge of the rules and regulations surrounding the use of trailers we hope to reduce the risk of breakdowns and accidents on local roads.”
