Help Walpole St Peters make their trip of a lifetime a reality
Two teenagers are working their socks off to be in a chance with embarking on a trip of a lifetime.
Ivan (16) and Nickolai (13) Clithero, who live in Walpole St Peter, have both been selected to represent Scouts at a huge event in South Korea - but there is a catch.
The brothers, who are both members of the 3rd Wisbech (St. Augustine’s) Scout Group, are desperate to go on the trip to the 25th World Scout Jamboree but need to raise £3,900 each to get there.
With this in mind, they are doing everything they can to bring in the cash.
Dad Sean said: “It really is quite a prestigious event in scouting and to have both been selected is really big.
“It was such a result getting selected - it was a long process where they first submitted an application online and explained why they wanted to go.
“Ivan had spoken about humour uniting everyone around the world while Nicholai said about his love of food and how he loves to try new food everywhere he goes.”
Once the boys had made it through to the selection day, Sean wanted to make sure they kept their expectations limited but he needn’t have worried.
“Before Christmas, Ivan was over the moon to find out he had been selected to go to represent Cambridgeshire.
“When he told his brother he was a bit upset but then he also found out he was going to join the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk Composite Group so it was great.
“However, while that was a result, reality hit when we found out about the costs. So, they started putting ideas together and we got things going.”
Sadly, fundraising got off to a slow start due to an unexpected and tragic family bereavement at the beginning of the year. However, both boys love working with wood and have been making and selling planters, hanging signs and engraved cork coasters. From this, birthday money, odd jobs, donations and a cake sale they have raised £900 so far.
They have further plans to run a car wash, quiz night and even have a go at some bag packing in a supermarket.
They will have a stall at the Walpole Village Weekend Market and Fayre (St. Peter’s Church) April 30 to May 1 and also at the market in St. Leonards Church, Leverington on May 7.
Sean added: “They are doing this all on their own and they’re really getting momentum now. We want to thank everyone who has helped so far and I know the boys will do anything they can to raise the money they need.”
