Gordon's lifetime support of Wisbech Town FC recognised with special honour
A military veteran who has been a lifelong supporter of Wisbech Town Football Club has been given a special honour.
Gordon Phoenix, who celebrates his 89th birthday in August, has been given a lifetime honorary membership ahead of a recent home game.
He remembers he was 11 -years-old when he first started watching the Fenmen and since then he has attended almost every home game the town has played.
Born on August 29 1934 Gordon was educated in Wisbech and spent all his working life around the town, except for the two years he spent completing his National Service in the Army Medical Corps.
Throughout his life he has been an example to those around him always ready to help out
and to offer sound advice.
Gordon plans to continue attending home matches and cheering on his team for as long as possible.
On the same day both the football club and Andy Maul from Bygones Café which is based at the ground were presented with certificates by the Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mark Knight, with the help of Wisbech mayor Susan Wallwork, with a certificate.
The presentation marked the fact that both have signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant, which aims to encourage businesses and organisations to support both veterans and current armed services personnel.
