General Election 2024: Lib Dems vow to ensure all burglaries are properly investigated after they say 75% went unsolved in Fenland in 2023
According to research by the Liberal Democrats ahead of the election on July 4 75% of burglary cases go unsolved in Fenland.
David Chalmers LibDem Parliamentary candidate for North East Cambridgeshire has warned “Too many families now feel unsafe in their own homes” as new figures show some areas see over nine in ten burglary cases go unsolved.
The figures come from a Freedom of Information request by the party to all 43 police forces across England and Wales – Cambridgeshire was one of 33 to respond to the request.
As a result, the Liberal Democrats say they will be making a call for a Burglary Response Guarantee in their manifesto to ensure all domestic burglaries are attended by a police officer and properly investigated.
The number of burglaries that went unsolved in Fenland in 2023 was 75%. Of the 187 unsolved cases, 141 had their investigation completed with no suspect identified.
Nationally, official government figures show that nearly 76% of burglaries went unsolved in 2023.
The party say its proposals would ensure that all domestic burglaries are attended by the police and properly investigated.
David Chalmers, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for North East Cambridgeshire claimed: “Too many families in Fenland now feel unsafe in their own homes because this Conservative Government has decimated frontline policing for too long.
“Victims are being denied justice because Conservative ministers can’t even get the basics right on solving crime. That is why the Liberal Democrats would deliver a Burglary Response Guarantee, to ensure all home burglaries are attended by the police and properly investigated.
“People are sick of seeing their local communities plagued by crime and just want this appalling Conservative government to be kicked out of office.”
Six candidates are hoping to win this constituency when voters go to the polls on Thursday, July 4.
They are incumbent Steve Barclay, who has represented the area for the Conservatives since May 2010, David Chalmers Liberal Democrats, Andrew Crawford Green Party, Michael Roberts Social Democratic Party, Christopher Thornhill for Reform UK, and Javeria Hussain for Labour.
