Flashfloods hit Wisbech as what was reportedly inches of rain fell in less than an hour

Torrential rain has caused flash flooding in one Fenland town this afternoon.

Many parts of Wisbech have been left under several inches of water and in some cases people’s homes have also been affected.

Firefighters have been helping one resident in Osborne Road after her home was left ankle deep in water and others in Weston Millar Drive were reporting deep water there too.

A massive thunder storm which hit the town mid afternoon and lasted at least 30 minutes is to blame for the flooding.

Areas such as Churchill Road, Wisbech Grammar School, Harecroft Road, St Peter’s car park, Wisbech cricket club, the town park and other roads across the town have suffered the results of the heavy rainfall which saw several inches fall in a short space of time.

Some people described their homes springing leaks as the heavens opened and one eyewitness described driving conditions as perilous and the worst rain they had seen. While the North Brink GPs’ surgery said they were dealing with problems with computers and phone lines after a lightning strike.

Heavy rain is forecast for the next few hours on and off but is expected to ease around 10.30pm.
