Fifty new affordable homes coming to Chatteris

A housing association is about to commence work on 50 homes for affordable rent in a Fenland town.

Accent Housing Association was granted planning permission in July this year, with work due to start on-site at the end of the year.

The mix of two, three and four-bedroom family homes on Fairbairn Way in Chatteris will be completed in December 2025. Once completed the scheme will benefit from rural views overlooking the fen landscape, whilst also benefitting from its close proximity to facilities in Peterborough and Cambridge.

This scheme of 50 homes is part of wider development ambitions for Accent across Fenland, Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. This new community will build on the association’s position as the second-largest affordable housing provider in Fenland. Accent’s investment in the new homes will be £12.7 million, supported through grant funding from Homes England.

Steve Morris, director of development at Accent Housing said, “Accent are delighted to be building fifty new homes in Chatteris. As a key provider of affordable housing across the region, we value our partnership with Fenland District Council and Homes England to enable us to build affordable housing to address the shortfall locally and nationally.

“All of our new homes aim to help customers access a safe, sustainable and affordable home in a community they feel part of. By using energy efficient construction and design we are able to reduce energy bills, and help our customers make their money go further.

“This is the first of three new sites in Fenland, in addition to 233 homes currently in construction across Fenland plus a further 100 in the pipeline. Accent are committed to providing local communities with more affordable homes, so families don’t need to move away from the areas they love.”

Accent are working with locally-based contractor, Burmor Construction. Megan Bemrose, quantity surveyor, said: “We are pleased to be increasing our portfolio with Accent Group and building 50 new homes for their residents in the picturesque market town of Chatteris. In keeping with the existing built environment, as well as the scenic aspects of the surrounding area, we will be using a classic brick and render finish. It is important to us that we work with our client to create homes that the end users are proud of; we hope that Chatteris achieves this.”

Accent is pleased to be working with Fenland District Council, who have given planning consent for the new homes to go ahead. Councillor Sam Hoy, Fenland’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “There’s a considerable need for affordable homes in Chatteris, Fenland and, in fact, nationally.

“We’re delighted Accent Housing is bringing forward this scheme to help plug that gap and provide affordable homes in Fenland.”

Accent has ambitious plans to develop 3,600 new affordable rented and low-cost home ownership homes by 2031. Accent’s future development plans are centred around the core principles of inclusivity, accessibility, and environmental responsibility. Through careful planning and innovative design, Accent will ensure that our developments seamlessly integrate with the existing fabric of the communities we serve.
