Fenland MP Steve Barclay is new health secretary following dramatic resignation of Sajid Javid

Fenland MP Steve Barclay has been appointed as the Government's new health secretary this evening.

Mr Barclay (50),who has been the Member of Parliament for North East Cambridgeshire since 2010, was previously the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and chief of staff for Downing Street.

His appointment by Prime Minister Boris Johnson comes after Sajid Javid's shock resignation, which was followed by Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The two senior cabinet ministers quit at the same time as Mr Johnson battled against criticism of his handling of the row over disgraced deputy chief whip Chris Pincher's conduct.
