Lorry becomes stranded on ‘impassable’ A1101 Welney Wash Road – with flood alerts also in place

A lorry driver was rescued from their vehicle after it became stranded on the flooded Welney Wash Road yesterday morning.

Firefighters from King’s Lynn, Methwold, Outwell and Littleport rescued the person, having received reports that they were stuck on the A1101 at 5.16am.

A stop message – meaning the incident was under control – was received at 6.40am.

It came on the day that the volunteer-run Welney Flood Watch group said that the water levels were at 3.35m.

In a post on Facebook, they said: “The road is impassable by normal road vehicles so find another route for the rest of this week.”

A later post added that the parish council had spoken to Norfolk Highways, who were set to block off the road to prevent any further vehicles causing further issues.

Meanwhile, a flood alert is in place at Welney.

The Environment Agency has issued the alert for the Hundred Foot Washes in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk – covering Welney.

Officials said: “We expect water levels to be high into the weekend.

“Avoid driving through floodwater and don’t put yourself in unnecessary danger.”
