Driver and his passenger have miraculous escape after crash in Guyhirn
A driver and his passenger had a miraculous escape after a crash in a Fenland village saw their vehicle end up just metres from a river.
The incident happened last night (Monday) at Selwyn Corner in Guyhirn and villagers believe a gate and concrete post saved the vehicle from ending up in the water.
Villagers who witnessed the two-vehicle collision posted on the Policing Fenland page to express their amazement that the driver and his passenger needed no more than hospital checks.
A nearby resident posted a video captured on CCTV that showed the car as it smashed through the metal gate and concrete post before flipping over and ending up on its side.
One witness said: “The gate and concrete posts saved his life for sure. You can see how much energy they absorbed, they were bent up like they were made of Plasticine. That was steel and rebar-reinforced concrete.”
A view echoed by another poster on the Police Fenland Facebook page.
He added: “ I live a few houses down from that crash, I was there maybe three minutes after it happened. If the gate and concrete posts hadn't been there to slow him down he'd have gone into the river.
“Driver was unconscious for a couple of minutes according to the first people there so that would have been it for him. The family in the other car seemed ok. Both cars are a write off though.”
Posting to their page Policing Fenland officers appealed for witnesses and said: “Today, Monday the Fenland Response Team, Wisbech Neighbourhood Policing Team, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and the East of England Ambulance Service attended a two-vehicle road traffic collision at Selwyn Corner, Guyhirn.
“One vehicle had left the road and ended up on top of the river bank.
“Two persons have been taken to hospital for checks. Enquiries continue into this collision.
