Contractor needed to build £600K community hub in Wisbech

The hunt is on for a contractor to build a proposed new £600,000 community hub for Wisbech Town Park.

Fenland District Council who is spearheading the project, which will see a single-storey community building complete with a multi-purpose hall, café and toilets built on the west edge of the park next to the apple orchard, has started the tendering process to find a contractor to do the work.

A planning application was submitted by Pick Everard on behalf of Fenland District Council last August with a report published alongside it which explained the building will include vandal resistant features as a key part of its design.

The application was made a year after it was announced the project had won £240,000 of funding from Cambridgeshire County Council and a further £299,000 from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. Fenland Council has also pledged £20,000 towards the scheme.

A design and access statement drawn up by Pick Everard, a consultancy practice that works within the property, infrastructure and construction industry, explains how the building’s size, layout and appearance has been developed and how the resulting building will be easy to use and navigate.

It explains the key design drivers were to ensure the building was vandal-resistant, energy efficient and with low running costs. The building will not only include the multi-purpose hall and café but also two sets of toilets as well as changing facilities. There will be toilets provided in and outside of the building.

The tendering process for the contract is on the government contracts website and has a value of between £500,000 to £1,000,000 and has a closing date of Friday January 20 with the expected start date of March 20 2023 and completion by September 20 2023.

Contractors will be required to show they are financially and technically capable of undertaking the works and previous experience will need to be evidenced. Fenland Council encourages the use of local contractors and supply chains where possible to stimulate the economic wellbeing of a deprived area of North Cambridgeshire.
