Long Sutton Church flower festival to take place with Today’s The Day theme
A flower festival will be raising money to help fund the repairs to a church’s wooden spire - which is believed to be the oldest and tallest in Europe.
St Mary’s Church in Long Sutton is hosting the event from May 2-6 with the theme Today’s The Day following the success of last year which raised £8,000.
Donations will go towards the spire which has suffered from woodworm and deathwatch beetle and repairs are underway by Oakley Frame Buildings.
The firm started work at the top of the spire, built around 1200, which should take six to eight weeks to complete.
They will be using similar methods to those deployed on the Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris.
The spire will remain closed during the festival and the clock and bells will be stopped as the timber and equipment space are tight in the tower.
