30 firefighters tackle accidental house blaze in Wisbech St Mary




More than 30 firefighters from across the area were called to tackle a house fire in a Fenland village yesterday morning.

Fenland police also attended the incident in Station Drive, Wisbech St Mary which happened at around 11.44am.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire Service said: “At 11.44am on Tuesday crews were called to a roof fire on Station Drive in Wisbech St Mary.

“Over 30 firefighters attended including crews from Wisbech, Stanground, March, Thorney, Chatteris, and the north roaming fire engine along with a turntable ladder and the command unit.

“Crews arrived to find a roof fire affecting two properties. Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire and cleared the smoke using a positive-pressure ventilation fan.

“Crews returned to their stations by 3pm.

“The cause of the fire was accidental.”

A police spokesperson added: “We were called to a house fire in Station Drive in Wisbech St Mary yesterday, and assisted our colleagues from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue and the East of England Ambulance Service Trust at the scene.

“The fire was later ruled as an accident, and no one needed to be taken to hospital.”
