Old school friends from Friday Bridge reunited in Wisbech Park after more than 80 years apart

Two old school friends have bumped into each other and rekindled their friendship after more than 80 years apart.

When residents from two Wisbech care homes were taken to Wisbech Park earlier in the month for the VE Day celebrations, two ladies in their nineties were reunited.

While residents were enjoying tea and cake in the café, Lyncroft resident Doreen Jinson, 96, spotted Kathleen King (known as Joyce), 94, who lives at Orchard House.

As a child, Joyce lived in Friday Bridge and Doreen in nearby Waldersea Sidings. They went to primary and secondary school together.

When they left school, Doreen moved to Wisbech, into The Prince of Wales pub with her husband’s family, which is where Trinity Surgery now is. Joyce went on to marry Don and moved to Waldersea Sidings.

Orchard House lifestyle lead Miranda Robinson and Lyncroft activity coordinator Sarah Perkins exchanged details to keep the friends in touch, and on Tuesday they met up again.

“They didn’t stop talking and reminiscing about their childhood,” said Miranda. “They told us they have known each other for over 90 years.

“They talked about their families and friends and fond memories of going through Friday Bridge with a horse and cart.

“It was wonderful to be a part of organising the reunion of two friends. It was lovely listening and learning about their childhood together.”

Sarah said: “Their friendship has opened the doors to our friendship and linking our homes together and working together in our community.”

Doreen added: “It was wonderful to see Joyce. As you get older, your friendship circle gets smaller, so it’s nice to have her back in my life again.”

Joyce said: “It was so nice to see Doreen, she hasn’t changed a bit. I am looking forward to our next catch-up. It’s amazing how much we have to talk about and catch up on.”
